This tool works by re-rendering each page as an image, which can occasionally produce a larger result than the original for already-efficient, text-based PDFs. When that happens, the original file is kept and offered for download instead, so you'll never end up with a result that's bigger than what you started with.

It depends on the page. Pages with real, selectable text are detected automatically and copied over untouched, so their text, links, and layout stay fully intact. Only pages with little or no extractable text — typically scans or image-only pages — are flattened into a compressed image, since that's where rasterizing actually reduces file size.
